With respect to appeals some people will argue that trial judges are supposed to be highly qualified and they should not make legal mistakes to begin with. However, this is unrealistic. Everyone makes mistakes sometimes. Additionally, the law is often complicated and unsettled. There are two able advocates each trying to convince the judge to go his or her way.
